In this unique training, you will explore:
1) Session 1 - Why Gender Competency?What is our ethical imperative to be gender-competent therapists? Learn about the ethics codes and practice guidelines that are under review in regards to gender, intersectionality, and multicultural awareness. Gain awareness of these issues that are crucial to you serving all clients.
2) Session 2 - Diagnosis and Classification The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual is evolving to update its descriptions of diagnoses related to gender. Learn about the changes that recognize gender diversity as normal, and the shift from terms such as gender non-conforming to gender diverse, experienced gender vs. desired gender, and gender identity disorder to gender dysphoria and what they mean. Sarah will also outline the changes in the ICD-11, which will be implemented in the next few years. Your understanding of these changes will ensure you are providing the most up-to-date and skilled care to your clients.
3) Session 3 - WPATH Standards of Care v.8 Learn about the updates to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care. You will explore the competency requirements for mental health professionals working with adults, adolescents, and children so you know what is expected of you as a therapist. And you’ll have a clear understanding of your role in helping your clients access services, treatment, and medical care. What you learn here can literally save lives.
4) Session 4 - APA TGNC Guidelines Guidelines are not Standards of Care, but they are best practices that can help build your competency. Learn how the American Psychological Association guidelines for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) people are changing — including getting rid of the term non-conforming — to reflect the rapid growth of knowledge in the area of gender diversity. The new guidelines are more affirming and focus on:
- Intersectionality and minority stress so you can see the complexity of multiple identities and sources of oppression
- Non-binary identities to help you step away from a binary gender system of thinking
- The unique strengths and possibilities for gender diverse people so you can support them to thrive

Session 5 - Our Collective Call To Competence The generation growing up in the world today is more aware and open to gender diversity than any generation before. All young people need support to navigate life as they develop, and that need is exceptionally crucial for the growing population of gender diverse youth. Learn how lack of support impacts young people, and the trends that illustrate the power of support and the crisis that we face when support is absent. Explore the controversies that have arisen over gender-diverse care so you can build your competence to support all gender identities.
